The Waikato Housing Initiative is proud to be part of Te Kaarerea Special Housing area we take a look at what makes it so unique:
50 homes are destined for local families thanks to innovation and collaboration.
Nic Greene Waikato Regional Housing Initiative co-chair says we have a vision to change the status quo of housing across the region, to do this, we need to think differently.
“Multi-Partner developments such as Te Kaarearea is a fantastic of example of how if we work together, we can achieve our goal of having every person and every family in the Waikato region be well housed in a safe, dry and warm environment,” says Mr Greene.
“We need more housing developments that put people first, and bring on-line affordable quality homes, it is more than just a house, it is about building the wellbeing of people within our communities.
“By collaborating and working towards a common goal, we will see our communities grow and flourish,” says Mr Greene.
Te Kaarearea is a Waikato Tainui led $11 million development that is part of an agreement signed with Hamilton City Council and Housing New Zealand (HNZ) to rebuild the Hamilton East area once known as Jebson Pl.
The old cul-de-sac will make way for a connecting road between Old Farm Rd and Cassidy St and this is where the homes will be built.
Te Kaarearea was purchased by Waikato-Tainui under the first right of refusal which was an outcome of their 1995 Waikato Raupatu Land Settlement.
Marae Tukere General Manager, Tribal Development and Wellbeing, Waikato-Tainui says this is the first housing development for Waikato-Tainui and our collaborations and partnerships across our community has enabled us to house up to 74 Waikato-Tainui whanau in total (including in the Kaainga Ora units). We look forward to future developments across the rohe with the support of our current and future partners including central and local government.
The Waikato Housing Initiative is a multi party coalition currently working on 6 priority areas to address housing in the Waikato. The initiative welcomes new members, more information can be found at www.waikatohousinginitiative.org
